Individual nominated on behalf of Darlong Community for Prominent Person Award on the Occasion of JanaJayti Gourav Diwas, 2023, organized by TRI, Govt. of Tripura

            Mr. Hnamsiama darlong, a resident of Khanchon Village was hand over the Award of Prominent Person l prize on the JanaJatiya Gaurav Diwas, 15th - 17th Novemeber 2023 at Agartala, the Capital City of Tripura, for his contribution in Sports Development and Upliftment in the state of Tripura, India. The underlying is his bio-note.  

          Sri. Hnamsiama Darlong, born on 8th October 1962 to a humble parents, is a residents of Kachancherra (82 Miles), Manughat, Longtarai Valley Dhalai Tripura. Mr. Darlong, being appointed as a Physical Instructor, School Education, Govt. of Tripura since 23rd June, 1983 posted at Jampui Hill Range, is a retired Tripura Government employee having being relieved off his duty in November 2023. At present, Mr. Darlong, having three daughters, lives with his only son, namely Gideon Darlong and enjoys working for the betterment and welfare of his fellow tribesmen and women at community level and beyond. On the given note, Mr. Hnamsiama has served as the Sports Convener of Young Darlong Association since 2012 and had stepped down from the designation on the ground of health issue in early 2023.

            The community is proud to nominate Mr. Hnamsiama Darlong solely for his contribution to the popularity and development Tripura Sports as an institute we have today. Following are some of his daring contribution made.

1.  He is a Tripura Champion on three stages in three different events viz.

            a. Champion in 200mt Sprint in 1977-78 participating from Team Sadar-A.

            b. Champion in kabaddi participating from Team Sadar-A

            c. Champion in School Football Tournament participating from Team Sadar-A 

2. He has represented Team Tripura in All India Inter-State Competition on several occasions:

            a. Participated in All India Inter-State Volleyball Championship, hosted by Punjab in1976-77 where Team Tripura was crowned as Champion.

            b. Participated in All India Inter-State 100mt Sprint Championship, hosted by Kerala at Quilam District in1976-77 where Team Mr. Hnamsiama Darlong was crowned as Champion (Gold Medallist). In fact, He can be considered to be the 1st Gold Medallist in sprint event for Tripura.  

            c. Represented Team Tripura in 1981 at National Football Tournament, held in Cuttack, the present state of Odisha, India. 

            d. Participated in National School Game Competition in 1979, hosted by Guahati, Assam. It was here that Mr. Hnamsiama Darlong has been selected (from Tripura team) to train at Patiala, the present state of Punjab for a month to represent Team India (in football) for the upcoming Summer Olympics 1980, Moscow. However, fate played it cruelty upon him. Because of the unavailability of proper means of transport at the given time, especially the airways, Mr. Hnamsiama Darlong, with a heavy heart had to return back home with broken dream.

            Nonetheles, Mr. Hnamsiama Darlong did not give up his dream and was determined to make it come true even through his sheer will of instruction, interest and contribution to the development of sports in Tripura. His adieu taste of win as a player was in his C.P.Ed days.

            The Darlong community strongly believe his agility, determination and willpower can be a source of inspiration for many sportsmen and women to come in the near and far future of the state.

Darlongs In Tripura

The Darlong resides in the present state of Tripura that witnessed influx of tribal n the past from places like Mongolia, Tibet, China, Burma and others. The migrants settled in the state and became the sons of the soil. The tribal settlers mainly comprised of non-Aryan stock, speaking dialects that belonged to Tibeto-Burman language group. Presently he state has 19 schedule tribe listed as follows; Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia, Chakma, Lushai, Mog, Garo, Kuki, Chaimal, Uchoi, Halam, Khasia, Bhutia, Munda, Orang, Lepcha, Santal, Bhil and Noatia. However, only nine are considered to be major tribes i.e. Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia, Noatia, Halam, Chakma, Mog, Lushai and Kuki. The Kuki included 17 unrecognised sub-tribes of which Darlong community is one. It is very unfortunate to know that the Darlong has never been mentioned in the Schedule Tribe List of Tripura despite of their presence being known to the Rajas and Maharajas of Tripura many decades back.
